This one-day workshop brought together many of the current experts in the field of silicene research, from Asia, Europe and the US. There were almost 20 papers on silicene. There was a healthy discussion on whether the Dirac cone has been observed or not. New results on silicene on various insulating substrates such as boron nitride and silicon carbide were presented by Prof. Jihun Zhao of Dalian University of Technology. His group also presented some additional insight into why silicene might like silver substrates; basically, the silicon atoms can easily roam around on the surface of silver and, hence, spread out into a film rather than cluster. The possibility of combining silicene with graphene was also discussed by Prof. Lok Lew Yan Voon of The Citadel.
